Rock In Rio-Polska?

Having established itself in Brazil, Portugal and Spain, Rock In Rio is looking to start its next new event in Poland in 2011.

Pollstar can reveal RIR is working with Radek Necki of Warsaw-based Prowokator, one of the country’s main production companies, and is in discussion with three Polish cities that have shown an interest and are thought capable of staging the show.

“One of the main conditions is the construction of a Rock City [festival site], as Poland doesn’t currently have a venue capable of staging the event,” said RIR executive vice president Roberta Medina, after collecting the “energy globe award” in Prague April 14 for its Portuguese Rock in Rio Solar School.

“We are working on Poland for June 2011, and the idea is also to repeat the event there every two years,” she explained, while stressing that the event is still very short of being confirmed.

In Madrid, builders worked around the clock to make sure a 200,000-square metre Rock City site near the airport was ready in time to launch the event in Spain.

Rock in Rio Solar School was voted best youth project dedicated to conserving energy. It was run in cahoots with ADENE, the Portuguese energy agency, with technical help from Lobosolar.

The awards, which are divided into five categories, attracted 796 projects from 11 countries.

Rock In Rio’s latest event was a huge fireworks display at Lisbon’s Ponte 25 De Abril Bridge, which celebrates the last year of the countdown to Rock in Rio-Lisbon 2010.
