Billy Joel’s Drummer Sues Piano Man

Sometimes you have to stop and wonder why some folks in the music biz wait years before filing lawsuits claiming someone owes them big bucks for past royalties.

Liberty DeVitto, for example. DeVitto drummed for Billy Joel from 1975 to 2005, but he just recently filed papers against Joel, claiming the Piano Man hasn’t paid all that is owed. DeVitto also named Sony Music in the lawsuit.

DeVitto, who says he was a “creative force” behind Joel’s music, told the New York Post that his relationship with the star might have deteriorated when he confronted the singer about his alcohol problems. Joel underwent rehab for alcohol abuse in 2005.

“I thought I could say things to him as a friend,” DeVitto told the Post.

How much does DeVitto say he’s owed? That’s undetermined. In fact, the drummer’s own lawyer said he isn’t even sure of the amount, saying Joel’s record sales are subject to an audit.

Meanwhile, DeVitto supports his family by spending his days working as a session musician. That is, when he’s not teaching music. Oh, and suing former bosses.
