Derderians Have Insurance Setback

A judge has ruled that Jeffrey and Michael Derderian cannot use their club’s insurance policy to cover legal expenses regarding the 2003 nightclub fire at The Station in West Warwick, R.I.

The two owners argued Essex Insurance Company should cover the cost of their defense, but Superior Court Judge Alice Gibney ruled last month the insurer has no obligation to do so.

The Derderians pleaded no contest in 2006 to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter in relation to the deaths of patrons at a Great White performance.

The band ignited pyro onstage at the small venue, resulting in a deadly fire. Michael Derderian was released on parole last month; Jeffrey avoided prison time.
