A Little More Info On Rundgren’s ‘AWATS’ Concerts

What can you expect at one of Todd Rundgren’s performances of his album “A Wizard, A True Star?”  How about a six-piece all-star band playing on an elaborate stage?

Although Rundgren released AWATS in 1973 he never played the album in its entirety until September of this year in Akron, Ohio.

But what’s really interesting is how the Akron show came about. It all started with the fans.

Specifically, two fans – Doug Ford and Melinda Cain – produced the Akron show. Ford and Cain are also the voices on RundgrenRadio.com.

Long time Rundgren hand and former Utopia member Kasim Sulton provides bass-work, backing vocals and even a few lead moments, as depicted in the embedded video below.

Other members include Tubes and Jefferson Starship drummer Prairie Prince; Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes; former Utopia keyboardist Ralph Schuckett; percussionist / horn player Bobby Strickland and former Guitar Player music editor Jesse Gress on lead guitar.

The West Coast AWATS run begins Dec. 1 at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre in San Francisco. Sacramento’s Crest Theatre is slotted for Dec. 2; Dec. 4 is L.A. at the Orpheum and Dec. 5 is Ventura at the Majestic Theatre.
