Sunset Strip Honors Slash

How do you follow a blow-out tribute to Ozzy Osbourne? That’s the quandary organizers of L.A.’s annual Sunset Strip Music Festival found themselves facing after last year’s wildly successful event. The solution? Salute a musician who practically “grew up” there, Slash.

The ceremony honoring one of the strip’s most famous sons at House of Blues in West Hollywood kicks off the August 26-28 festival, which features live performances at all six of the Sunset Strip’s legendary venues: Cat Club, House of Blues, Key Club, The Roxy Theatre, Viper Room and Whisky A Go-Go.

“I am sincerely overwhelmed to be the recipient of the Sunset Strip Music Festival honors!,” Slash said. “The Strip and West Hollywood have been my stomping grounds since I was a little kid. I grew up in and around the music scene here. It is where I got my start in the music business and where I feel most at home. Thank you so much.”

Over the course of his career, the former Guns N’ Roses guitarist has earned a reputation as one of the industry’s “go-to musicians,” collaborating with artists from Michael Jackson to Rihanna.

Slash’s upcoming self-titled solo album, due April 6, features guest appearances from Osbourne, Fergie, Lemmy, Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and more.

The three-day celebration of the Strip’s legacy concludes with a street festival on Saturday, with the area from San Vicente Boulevard to Doheny Drive blocked off to allow for outdoor stages featuring live performances from morning to night.

Previous SSMF honorees include Lou Adler (founder of The Roxy Theatre), Mario Maglieri (founder of The Rainbow) and Elmer Valentine (founder of Whisky A Go-Go, as well as rock icon Osbourne who gave his first U.S. performance at the Whisky as part of Black Sabbath in 1970.

Additional details on Sunset Strip Music Festival 2010, including the lineup of acts performing and ticket information, will be announced in the coming weeks.
