Greensboro Shed Sacked

City councilors in Greensboro, N.C., recently put an end to a stalled amphitheatre project that they’d only learned about after construction began last year.

In a split vote, several council members questioned plans to expand the Greensboro Coliseum Complex considering the city’s current economic state, the Greensboro News & Record reported.

“We can’t pay for what we have now,” councilwoman Trudy Wade said.

The project had been allocated $95,000 from an interim city manager toward the construction of an amphitheatre near the venue. Additional funding was expected to come from Coliseum sponsorship money.

Several officials were caught off guard last fall when they learned some work, including grading, had already begun at the site.

“This whole thing happened out of the blue,” councilwoman Mary Rakestraw told WGHP News. “It didn’t go through City Council, was not a line item budget and we didn’t vote on it.”
