Friday Fun: Solo Energy

One artist, one instrument. A single musician standing (or sitting) on stage, playing his / her heart out for you. When it comes to doing it alone, who is the best solo artist you’ve ever seen?

Folk master Pete Seeger was known for his stage presence and ability to break down barriers between artist and audience. Playing only a banjo or guitar, he would have an audience hanging on every word and note, leading a packed theatre in sing-a-longs one minute, followed by a poignant moment where only the sounds of his voice and instrument filled the hall. Now, that’s an entertainer.

Of course, some musicians who cut their teeth playing with bands have also gone the solo route. Elton John has done a few tours accompanied only by his piano. Bruce Springsteen has done the lone musician thing as has Neil Young, who will embark on the solo road this year. Sometimes less really is more.

Which leads us to this morning’s thread – which artists have thoroughly entertained you, sans band, light show and spectacle? Furthermore, which band singer would you like to see in a solo setting? Getting down to basics is what today’s Friday Fun entry is all about. Just drop your remarks in the comment trail below.
