Suge Knight Sues Kanye
Knight’s lawsuit claims the Shore Club and West, who hosted the VIP party, failed to provide adequate security to screen for weapons at the event, which allegedly led to the rap producer being shot in the leg. The lawsuit seeks more than $1 million in damages in medical costs and lost property.
Knight’s attorney, Marc Brumer, said April 6 that Shore Club owners should have known there was the potential for danger for Knight because of the then-East Coast/West Coast rap feud.
“He’s an icon in the music industry. He walks in a room and he lights it up,” Brumer said. “He had an expectation of security there. How someone came with a gun into a very VIP party, that just doesn’t pass the smell test in life.”
In court papers, West and Shore Club owners Philip South Beach and Morgans Hotel Group Management have denied the negligence claims.
A judge has scheduled a Dec. 6 trial date in Miami.
The lawsuit was originally filed in Los Angeles as part of Knight’s 2006 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, which resulted in Knight’s Death Row Records and other assets being auctioned off.
Should Knight win his case, the proceeds would be shared with the IRS and bankruptcy trustee.
