Medeski Martin & Wood’s Big Summer Plans
On June 9 the trio – which features keyboard/organ/piano player John Medeski, drummer/percussionist Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood – will perform two 60 minute sets at Nevessa Soundstage near Woodstock, N.Y. One set will feature tunes from MMW’s Radiolarians series (a three album set released 2008-2009) with the second set fully improvised.
June 10’s webcast features a master class hosted by MMW titled “Form and Improvisation.” According to the band’s website, the band will “examine the different ways they use composition to lend structure to interactive group improvisation,” noting that “there are endless ways to create music for improvisation beyond the ‘head-solo-head’ format most commonly used.”
Ticketholders will have the chance to join in on the discussion by submitting questions and comments through Facebook and Twitter.
In exchange for $24.95 fans can enjoy both events from the comfort of their own home with the option to view the live stream as well as a one-month period of on-demand streaming.
A limited number of tickets are also available to attend both events in person. Tickets, which include a meet & greet with MMW, will set you back $100 per night or $160 for both nights.
Camp MMW takes place Aug. 1-6 in the Catskill Mountains at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, N.Y. The camp gives musicians and fans the chance to study with the members of MMW, along with a number of special guests through “five days of intensive workshops and seminars, deep listening, musical exploration, and improvisation.”
Musicians of various levels are encouraged to apply with players of all instruments welcome. Space is limited to 80 students age 16 years and up. Fans are required to submit two samples of music in MP3 format with at least one music sample played solo without accompaniment. The program costs $2,000 and includes 5 nights of shared accommodations at Full Moon Resort; organic, gourmet meals; four days of lessons and programs in addition to evening events and performances.
June 4 MMW opens for the John Butler Trio at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo., followed by a June 5 slot at Free Press Summer Fest at Eleanor Tinsley Park in Houston, Texas. The next week the group plays Bonnaroo Music Festival June 10-13 in Manchester, Tenn., with a headlining gig at NorVa in Norfolk, Va., set for June 14.
