Roskilde Remembers

Patti Smith gave a poignant opening-day speech as Roskilde Festival remembered the nine people who died there 10 years ago in a crowd crush.

Forty-three others were injured in what was eventually attributed to “a chain of unfortunate circumstances” caused by a poor sound system prompting the crowd to push forward to hear better.

Many of the crowd safety initiatives from the UK’s University Of Buckingham are now begun at what for a long time was northern Europe’s biggest annual festival.

This year the 75,000-capacity event sold out two weeks in advance and early estimates suggest it made 10 million Danish kroner ($1.7 million) profit.

The acts on the bill July 1-4 included Prince, Gorillaz, Muse and Pavement.
