The tragic incident took place at about 10 p.m. last night while Hansard was talking to the audience between songs. Witness reports indicate the unidentified man apparently jumped from the roof near the lighting rig, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

“I saw him standing there on the edge of the roof, I thought it was part of the act, and then he took off running and jumped, did a couple of flips and landed on the stage,” concertgoer Kyle Rivers told the Mercury News. “It was pretty traumatic.”

The newspaper cited eyewitness reports saying Hansard walked over to the body as several people, including doctors attending the show, tried to provide aid.

The Swell Season posted the following on its Facebook page:

“The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the unfortunate events of last night. Our hearts go out to the victim who decided to take his life at last night’s gig at the Saratoga Mountain Winery and also to his friends and family.”

A video posted on YouTube shows an ambulance pulling into the venue while concertgoers are asked to “gather in the plaza” until further instructions in order to “get the emergency vehicles out of the venue.”
