The band was scheduled to play Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., Oct. 15. While the date had been on the books for quite some time, it turns out officials at the Christian college were concerned that the group’s appearance might send the wrong signal.

Yes, that’s right. Calvin College is a Christian school. And, while we applaud the college for seeing past the name in booking the band for an evening’s entertainment, we can sympathize with whomever was tasked to explain why a band containing the word “pornographers” in its name was chosen to play the school.

Evidently school officials have spent more than a few minutes pondering this somewhat odd predicament. After all, if you were running a Christian college, would you be comfortable with radio or newspapers ads proclaiming that pornographers, new or old, were coming to your school?

“After weeks of discussion and consideration, the irony of the band’s name was impossible to explain to many,” Calvin College officials said in a statement, according to The Grand Rapids Press. “The band’s name, to some, is mistakenly associated with pornography. Consequently, Calvin, to some, was mistakenly associated with pornography. Neither the college nor the band endorses pornography.”
