NZ Venue Loses Roof

Stadium Southland’s roof collapsed after about 8 inches of snow fell on Invercargill, New Zealand, during a storm.

The 2,000-capacity venue hosts concerts and conferences and is home to the Southern Steel netball team.

Alan Dennis, deputy chairman of the Southland Indoor Leisure Centre Charitable Trust, which owns the stadium, told local media the stadium was “a complete writeoff” with damages of up to NZ$12 million ($8.8 million).

There will be an investigation, as it was only built 10 years ago for NZ$10 million ($7.3 million).

The stadium has to cancel two years’ worth of events with 20 staffers losing their jobs. The indoor cycling velodrome in the complex was undamaged.
