The Black Keys & Peas

The Black Keys might have won the best breakthrough video at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards but the moon man they recently received in the mail says it belongs to another group sharing a similar name – The Black Eyed Peas.

The blues-rock duo posted a picture of the trophy on the Keys’ official website on Friday along with a note declaring, “We are super proud of Fergie!!!”

Vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer/producer Patrick Carney won the award for the tune “Tighten Up,” which hails from the band’s sixth album, Brothers.

Dan Black, Coldplay and Gorillaz were also nominated for the award. The Black Eyed Peas were not.

On Monday MTV issued an apology to the Keys and promised that new moon men would be on their way soon.

“MTV sincerely regrets the clerical error that resulted in The Black Keys receiving the wrong VMA awards. We are happy to report new trophies reflecting The Black Keys’ win are currently in development and they should receive them shortly. Lastly, we thank The Black Keys for their considerable patience and understanding regarding this matter.”

Carney told Rolling Stone the band was amused by the whole mix-up.

“This isn’t the first time they have f**ked up our s**t with the Black Eyed Peas. In 2003 they played our video for ‘Set You Free’ on TRL labeled as the Black Eyed Peas. It’s fitting for us that when we win our first award it’s mislabeled. Hopefully we win their Grammy as well one day! We actually don’t give a s**t about this, though. It’s funny.”
