Art Garfunkel Returning From The Sounds Of Silence

Art Garfunkel says his voice is recovering from vocal cord paresis, which forced Simon & Garfunkel to postpone this year’s North American tour indefinitely.

After playing the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival April 24, the duo was originally scheduled to kick off a round of U.S. and Canadian headline dates April 29. Citing a “vocal strain  …   sustained by Garfunkel,” the tour was pushed back to July. In mid-June the tour was postponed until further notice.

“My voice is coming back slowly, too slowly,” Garfunkel told Rolling Stone. “In my bones I feel healthy. I know it’s coming back. I just have to be patient.”

The singer said he plans to start rehearsing again in the spring with the hope that he and Paul Simon will hit the stage together again next summer.

“That means that our tour of last summer will have taken a one year pause,” he said. “Think of me like Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies. In print I saw him say, ‘I expect to be fully better around February or March.’ When he said that I thought, ‘Maybe my vocal chord is like Jimmy Rollins’ hamstring.’”

Garfunkel explained that giving up smoking helped with the healing process.

“Two weeks ago my doctor put a camera down my nose into my throat,” he said. “He said ‘I really like what I see. You’re in good shape, basically. All the apparatus is right. You will definitely be a singer and just fine again. You just have to have patience. You just irritated it with the heat of smoking until two and a half months ago.’”
