The band started teasing a reunion in July when it posted a photo of surviving members Ric Ocasek, Greg Hawkes, Elliot Easton and David Robinson sitting in a recording studio along with a note asking “Anyone in the mood for a reunion by The Cars?”

Now there’s some music to go with that good ol’ get-the-band-back-together vibe in the form of a 56-second snippet of “Sad Song” recently posted on the band’s Facebook page.

“Sad Song” sounds like the band never called it quits and includes several characteristics of the traditional Cars sound, including hand clapping and an opening riff that would feel right at home on the band’s 1978 debut album. Check it out here.

The Pop Candy blog says a new album called Sharp Subtle Flavor will be released in 2011.

So far, all this talk about a Cars reunion seems to be centered on the album and there’s been no hint of a tour. In 2007, Cars members Hawkes and Easton toured with Todd Rundgren, Kasim Sulton and Prairie Prince under the moniker The New Cars.
