Judge Drops Kalimba Rape Charge

A Mexican judge ruled there isn’t enough evidence to try pop singer Kalimba on rape charges and ordered him released Jan. 27.

Despite the judge’s ruling, prosecutor Francisco Alor plans to appeal the decision “based on overriding interests of the minor, international treaties protecting minors and in view of the opinions of the human rights commission.”

Kalimba, formerly with the group OV7, is accused of raping a 17-year-old girl Dec. 19 at a Quintana Roo hotel. He has denied the accusations.

The singer previously hinted to CNN affiliate Televisa that there’s more to the story.

“There are many details that are very easy to criticize, judge or imagine,” Kalimba reportedly said, and asked the public to use common sense when considering the case.
