For The Benefit Of Japan

The first benefit show takes place March 27 at the Miller Theatre. In addition to performances by Sonic Youth and Ono, the event also features Faith No More singer Mike Patton, Sean Lennon, Cibo Matto, Mephista, Marc Ribot, Uri Caine and Zorn’s Aleph Trio. Zorn is hosting the event.

“The tragedy and devastation is really overwhelming,” Zorn said in a statement posted on the Miller Theatre’s website. “I’ve always felt a strong personal connection to Japan, and I’m just glad to be able to do my part to help. It should be an amazing night.”

The website for the Miller Theatre notes that both the performers and the theatre are donating their services. All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund.

Tickets to the event are sold out.

The other event Zorn has organized takes place at New York’s Japan Society April 9. The 12-hour concert will feature dozens of music acts and performances throughout the day. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in special activities such as making origami cranes and washi lanterns.

Confirmed performers for the 1 p.m. gala block include Zorn, along with Philip Glass, Hal Willner, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson.

The 6 p.m. gala block will feature a solo performance by Ryuichi Sakamoto, in addition to a set by Bill Laswell.

A $5 entrance fee will be collected at the door. Concert seats, priced at $100 per gala block, will go on sale soon.

All proceeds from admission sales will go to the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund.  The event is supported by Mitsubishi International Corporation and Kikkoman Corporation.
