The Stone Roses Not Reuniting
Today’s rumor is just another in a series of speculations that have popped up over the years since the English indie rock band broke up in 1996.
The Sun reported earlier today that a “megabucks” reunion is in the works for sometime later this year. The British tabloid said that vocalist Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire had “established contact again” after not speaking to one another for nearly 15 years. An anonymous source was quoted confirming that the musicians involved in “one of the most bitter feuds in rock ‘n’ history” had patched things up.
Mani, who currently plays in Primal Scream, told NME that he was offended by the rumor because it stemmed from Brown and Squire attending the bassist’s mother’s funeral.
“I’m disgusted that my personal grief has been invaded and hijacked by these nonsensical stories,” he told NME.
“Two old friends meeting up after 15 years to pay their respects to my mother does not constitute the reformation of The Stone Roses. Please f**k off and leave it alone. It isn’t true and isn’t happening.”
A 1990 Rolling Stone feature described the group as “the most successful band to emerge from Manchester since the Smiths.” The band released their debut self-titled album in 1989, followed by what would be their final album, 1994’s Second Coming.
