Filled with 40 songs ranging from hits to the obscure to cover versions, the “Spectacular Spinning Songbook” hasn’t appeared on a Costello tour in 25 years. The concept is simple enough; Audience members are invited up on stage to give the wheel a spin.

Once the wheel picks a song, the fans are offered two choices. Spend the duration of the song’s performance in the tour’s “Hostage To Fortune Go-Go Cage” or sit in the onstage “Society Lounge” while Costello and his Imposters obey the will of the wheel.

However, the “Spectacular Spinning Songbook” doesn’t make an appearance on every stop on the tour. For example, the time needed to construct and install the wheel on-stage pretty much prevents its usage at Costello’s festival appearances. Other problems, including safety or production issues, are keeping it from doing its magic at select shows throughout the tour.

But the “Spectacular Spinning Songbook” will appear at more concerts than it will miss. June shows not including the wheel are Ottawa Jazz Fest June 24; Buffalo Rocks The Place in Buffalo, N.Y., June 25 and Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Mich., June 27. July gigs sans wheel are Richmond, Va., at Innsbrook Pavilion July 20; Gathering Of The Vibes festival in Bridgeport, Conn., July 23; Hyannis, Mass., at the Cape Cod Melody Tent July 27; the Osheaga Festival in Montreal July 30 and the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island July 31.

While the wheel won’t make an appearance at the above shows, expect Costello and his band to expand the setlist by incorporating more favorites plus a few surprises.

Meanwhile, if the show you have tickets for wasn’t mentioned above, then be prepared to have a go at the “Spectacular Spinning Songbook”. Just don’t embarrass yourself by asking Costello if you can buy a vowel.
