Bangor Taps Builder For New Arena

Officials in Bangor, Maine, have selected a regional construction company to build a $65 million arena and convention center in the city.

Cianbro Corp. reportedly plans to break ground later this summer on the 8,000-capacity arena and convention center complex that will replace the city’s aging Bangor Auditorium & Civic Center.

A majority of voters passed a city referendum to fund the project in May. While facility designs are still apparently being finalized, Cianbro officials told the Bangor Daily News the firm is ready to “execute and meet all the expectations of the city.”

“This is a community that has really taken ownership of the project,” Cianbro chair Peter Vigue said. “That’s really exciting.”

The paper noted the project will be funded with revenues from Hollywood Slots and a special downtown taxing district.

A management firm has yet to be selected but SMG and Global Spectrum were previously cited as contenders to manage the new arena.
The project is scheduled for a late 2013 completion.
