‘Saving The Rock’ In Portland

It’s always sad when your favorite radio station changes its format. On the other hand, a station’s demise is a great reason for creating a music festival.

KUFO rocked Portland, Ore., for more than 20 years as it shook up the Pacific Northwest airwaves with Slipknot, Godsmack, Disturbed and others considered to be integral sounds of the radio industry’s “active rock” format. But the good times changed in March when the station flipped to a news/talk format under the call letters KXL.

Now rock fans in the Portland area are anticipating the with its “Save The Rock” lineup taking place at the Washington County Fairplex Aug. 28. Produced by Ledge Entertainment, PDX Rock Fest will feature performances by Korn, Five Finger Death Punch, Queensryche, Chevelle, Hinder, All That Remains, Duff McKagan, Like A Storm and others. While the festival may not bring KUFO back from radio’s land of the lost, it will show the broadcast powers that be that active rock is alive and well in the City of Roses, even though it needs a radio station to go with it.

“We’ve always loved playing in Portland,” Korn’s Jonathan Davis said in a statement. “We heard about the radio station going away and we wanted to help. We know there are some die-hard Korn fans there and we are coming to support them and stand up for rock music.”
