The first-ever “American Idol” winner recently tweeted her fans about her preference among the current crop of Republicans campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination.

“I love Ron Paul,” Clarkson said to her fans via Twitter. “I liked him a lot during the last Republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”

Clarkson’s love for fellow Texan Paul didn’t exactly go down smoothly among some of her fans.

“I used to like Kelly Clarkson,” Minnesota resident Spafford Freeman told Fox411. “I have listened to ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ for the last time.”

But not all responses were negative. Many of Clarkson’s fans commended her for expressing her thoughts.

“Kelly, don’t apologize for stating your opinions,” tweeted @PatriciAndez. “Your true fans will and should respect them even if they don’t agree!!!”

While Clarkson endorsing any candidate would probably have ticked off fans, Paul’s current controversy regarding statements perceived as racist that were published in a newsletter bearing his name appears to be one of the main reasons the singer’s followers didn’t care for her political views.

Of course, a music artist choosing the last week of the year to express support for a political candidate is bound to attract attention. News of Clarkson’s Paul-luvin’ tweet quickly circled the globe and was covered not only by the U.S. media outlets including the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and USA Today, but received attention across the sea, gaining headline space in Australian paper Sydney Morning Herald as well as London’s Daily Mail.

Which just goes to show that everything is fair game during a slow news week. Even at Pollstar.com.
