Cee-Lo’s New Year’s Eve Blunder
It’s also probably not a good idea to sing the line “Imagine no possessions” while decked out in a fur coat and shades, but we digress.
Appearing in New York City’s Times Square during NBC’s New Year’s Eve telecast, Green occurred the wrath of Lennon fans throughout the world when he changed a line in the song. While singing “Imagine there’s no countries / it isn’t hard to do / Nothing to kill or die for / And no religion too,” Green changed the last line to “And all religion is true,” which probably isn’t the message Lennon had in mind when the song was released in 1971.
With the performance airing nationally (it also ran on CNN) it didn’t take long for Green to hear from fans who weren’t pleased with new lyrics. Twitter messages criticized “The Voice” judge for changing not only Lennon’s words but the meaning of the song as well.
“You sang Imagine in a fur coat & expensive jewelry and changed [the lyrics] to be pro-religion,” tweeted one fan, according to Rolling Stone. Sports journalist John Giannone also had something to say, tweeting “I am imagining the spin cycle inside John Lennon’s grave right now,” according to London’s Guardian.
Green eventually responded to those knocking his rendition of “Imagine”
“Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys” Green tweeted his followers. “I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that’s all.”
However, you can’t read Green’s response or the tweets dissing him on his Twitter page because the singer has since deleted any reference to the controversy. Instead, he has posted a message saying “Now playing: we just disagree [by] dave mason.”
