Erwin Frankel Dies

Erwin Frankel, 76, a concert promoter and radio host who helped introduce American audiences to world music, died Feb. 18 in New York after a series of strokes.

Frankel got his start promoting concerts in the ’50s, booking artists as varied as Dizzy Gillespie and Pete Seeger to fado singer Amália Rodrigues and flamenco guitarist Sabicas.

His radio career included stints as the host of “Jazz ’n Things” and “Music From Around the World,” which showcased folk and world music on NYC’s WABC from 1959 to 1972.
