‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’ Coming To The Theatre
The musical will premier in either November or December at the La Jolla Playhouse, according to the Los Angeles Times. “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots” is written and directed by Des McAnuff with music and lyrics by The Flaming Lips.
In addition to music from the namesake album, the musical will feature music from additional Lips albums including 1999’s The Soft Bulletin and 2006’s At War with the Mystics.
Described as a “poignant, humanistic story about the triumph of love and optimism over the mystery of our own mortality,” the musical stars a young Japanese artist named Yoshimi who is fighting a war with fate in a robot-world.
The Los Angeles Times points out that screenwriter/producer/playwright Aaron Sorkin is no longer involved with the project.
McAnuff, who was the former artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse and whose directing credits include the current Broadway revival of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” issued a statement confirming that Sorkin had initially planned to write a book for the musical but has since “turned his attention to other projects.”
“Wayne [Coyne of The Flaming Lips] and I continue to fine tune the libretto and score for the musical which will go into rehearsal in La Jolla in the middle of September. We are both looking forward to Yoshimi with keen anticipation. We know that we have Aaron’s enthusiastic blessing on our project.”
