Odds & Ends: Rihanna, ‘Orlando Calling’ and Robin Gibb
Judge Rihanna?
Entertainment blog MediaTakeOut.com sez Rihanna has agreed to appear as a judge on the U.S. version of “X Factor.” Quoting somebody described as “very close” to Rihanna, MTO says the singer’s payment for gracing Simon Cowell’s program will range from $15 million to $20 million plus perks. But who needs perks when you’re getting $20 million?
While Rihanna’s X Factor judgeship hasn’t been confirmed or denied by the artist or the show itself, it was only two weeks ago when everyone was talking about Britney Spears getting the job. Or Fergie. Or LeAnn Rimes.
Orlando Calling … Not
The two-day Orlando Calling festival came on like gangbusters in 2011, booking Bob Seger, Kid Rock, The Killers, Blake Shelton, Doobie Brothers, The Raconteurs, The Roots, and more for its debut at the Citrus Bowl in November. But don’t spend your time waiting for the call this year. The festival’s Facebook page says it’s a no go.
“Unfortunately Orlando Calling will not be happening this year, but we are continuing to have discussions in the city to see if there is an opportunity to bring it back in 2013. We will keep you updated on any developments.”
Why no Orlando Calling? Light ticket sales probably didn’t ensure the festival’s return. Organizer Melvin Benn apparently lost more than $2 million on the festival, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Robin Gibb’s Latest Medical Episode
Robin Gibb recently underwent surgery to remove a blood clot that “caused perforation,” according to the singer’s website which notes that the operation “follows earlier surgery for a twisted intestine and is unrelated to Robin’s recent illness.”
In February while appearing on the BBC Radio 2, Gibb said he was making a “spectacular recovery” from cancer and confirmed that doctors had removed a growth from his colon.
Today’s announcement also said Gibb’s promotional commitments for The Titanic Requiem album have been canceled. Gibb was to appear at a London concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of when the ill-fated ship set sail on its disastrous maiden voyage. Set for April 10, the concert was planned to take place exactly 100 years to the day Titanic steamed out of Southampton, England, for its rendezvous with destiny.
