Scarborough On Track For Concerts

Southern Maine could be in for a full concert calendar this summer following a town council decision to allow a promoter to begin booking shows at the Scarborough Downs racetrack.

Officials told the local Portland Press Herald the site can hold several thousand concertgoers and is close to the Maine Turnpike, which would minimize traffic issues.

“We know there have been concerts there before, but not a whole series of them in one summer,” Councilor Carol Rancourt said. “If this is successful it could be a real boon to the town.”

Alex Gray promotes the Bangor Waterfront Pavilion in central Maine and told councilors he may be able to convince artists that visit Bangor to swing through southern Maine as well, the paper reported.

Artists on the books for Bangor this summer include Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Godsmack, Gary Allan, Zac Brown Band, The Beach Boys and Rascal Flatts.

Officials are reportedly considering improvements to the racetrack including a new stage, a loading dock and new lights and sound.
