Morrissey Retiring At 55?

Morrissey says he’s doesn’t think he’ll be touring anymore once he turns 55, giving you two more years to see the English singer/songwriter live. In a recent interview he explains that this charming man is getting old and that his body isn’t what it once was.

In the interview with MSN’s JuiceOnline.com, the writer told Moz, “You once said that you don’t foresee yourself performing past 55. Is that still true?”

“Yes,” the former Smiths frontman said, noting that he was “slightly shocked” he has been performing this long.

“This is my 30th year, and I’ve aged a lot recently, which is bit distressing for me, as it must be for everyone. The body changes shape and there’s nothing you can do about it. Do I continue as a modern day Andy Williams? I take one hour at a time. We will all probably be blown up by the Syrian government soon, anyway, so it hardly matters in the great scheme of things [laughs].”

Rather than penning new gloomy tunes, maybe Morissey will write a new book. Earlier in the interview Morrissey talked about the books he wrote in the ‘80s about the New York Dolls and James Dean, and agreed that he’d like to reinvent himself as an author instead of a musician.

Before Morrissey says goodbye to the stage he has several European gigs scheduled for July. His next performance is July 5 at Les Ardentes Festival in Liege, Belgium.

What do you think about Morrissey’s tentative retirement plans? Do you think it’s gruesome that someone so handsome should care about getting older? Leave a comment and tell us if you think Moz should keep performing or quit before he’s compared to Andy Williams.
