Expo Anxiety

The organizers of the Yeosu Expo, which opened May 12 in the South Korean port city and runs until the end of August, are anxious about attendance numbers that haven’t been as high as projected.

Consequently, they’ve initiated the Expo Pop Festival to attract more visitors, in particular foreign visitors.

Every night a prominent K-pop artist will perform at the Expo, and so far the organizers have lined up some superstars, including top-shelf acts Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, SHINee and 2AM.

A special outdoor stage has been erected for the festival in an area that can accommodate up to 20,000 spectators.

Before the Expo opened, organizers expected 10 million visitors over the course of its 93-day run but, if attendance continues at its current sluggish pace, the Expo can expect only half that number.
