Pieces Of Roberts Stadium Salvaged

The shuttered Roberts Stadium in Evansville will be torn down, but city officials expect to salvage some of its parts.

Plans are for some seats from the old arena to be moved to the Mesker Ampitheatre, and some of the building’s bricks will be sold at a University of Evansville fundraiser. The school’s basketball teams played at Roberts from 1955 until the city’s new downtown arena opened last year.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke tells the Evansville Courier & Press that officials are taking inventory of other items such as concession facilities. An auction could be held by early August.

Winnecke says the arena’s demolition likely will begin soon after the auction. The city’s parks board previously approved plans to convert the site into a park.
