Kellie Pickler Buzzes Hair To Support Breast Cancer Survivor

Kellie Pickler helped her best friend prepare for chemotherapy by agreeing to get matching haircuts. The country singer and her longtime pal Summer Holt Miller both buzzed off all of their hair in a video unveiled this morning on “Good Morning America.”

The two friends, who are so close they call one another “sisters,” wanted to show the world their new look to bring attention to the importance of early detection when it comes to breast cancer.

“Cancer does not discriminate,” Pickler said.

“If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it,” Miller added.

Miller, who was only 36 at the time, received the diagnosis in June that she had breast cancer. She has been documentary her journey battling cancer through her blog on CaringBridge.org.

In early August she announced that she had gotten her final pathology report and that she was cancer free.

“I wanted to shout it from the roof-tops,” Miller wrote. “Yes, I still must take chemo because of the type cancer I had (Her2+) and that will begin in approximately two weeks. This is the best way to ensure that my cancer does not return in another part of my body.”

After undergoing a double mastectomy in August, Miller will start chemotherapy Sept. 6.

Her most recent blog post, dated Aug. 29, notes that she decided to shave her head before starting chemotherapy because she was told it was mentally easier to buzz it all off rather than waking up with hair falling out on her pillow.

“I’m really not that apprehensive about shaving my head. It is hair and it will grow back,” Miller wrote. “However, I am secretly hoping that it grows back like my friend Tonia Icenhour’s did … thick and curly.”

Pickler seems to be enjoying her new look. After the video aired on “Good Morning America,” she tweeted, “Thinking about being ‘G.I. Jane’ for Halloween” along with the symbol for a winking happy face.
