Led Zeppelin’s Countdown

Led Zeppelin’s Facebook page has launched what appears to be a five-day countdown to … something, resulting in fans wishing, hoping and praying for a reunion. However it’s looking as if the numbers are more about a CD/DVD release than the band putting on its road boots.

As any Zep fan can tell you, the last time the band played together was when Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham played what is still the most awesome one-off concert of the new millennium, the London O2 Arena Dec. 10, 2007.

Since that famed December evening there have been rumors of reunions and tours although Plant doesn’t seem to be onboard with such an enterprise. The band was rumored to be auditioning singers in 2009 but nothing ever came of it. Although Zeppelin manager Peter Mensch told BBC Radio 6 Music in January ’09 that the band was rehearsing and searching for someone to replace Plant, he later told MusicRadar that reunion plans were “completely over.”

“Led Zeppelin are over,” Mensch said. “If you didn’t see them in 2007, you missed them. It’s done. I can’t be any clearer than that.”

So what are those numbers on Led Zeppelin’s Facebook page, including today’s No. 3 displayed in the very same Roman numeral that appeared on the cover of the band’s third album, counting down to? Apparently there will be an announcement of a CD/DVD of the 2009 2007 O2 show.

During the weekend Mensch tweeted “It’s almost here. I’ve seen it and heard it. Almost 5 years to the day,” hinting that something big was being released in December to coincide with the five-year anniversary of the O2 gig.

As many publications have pointed out, Mensch tweeted in July that such a package was in the works, saying producer/engineer Alan Moulder was mixing the O2 show, noting “it’s been 5 years coming and it’s almost here.”

But many fans are hanging on to the idea that the band’s Facebook page is counting down to a reunion and tour. Guess we’ll have to wait a few days to find out. According to London’s Guardian, the “big reveal” is set for Thursday. Stay tuned.
