Andrew Bird’s Crowdfunded Latin America Tour

In February Andrew Bird will play six shows in Latin America. One of the dates is confirmed for Sao Paulo, Brazil. The other five gigs could take place anywhere from Venezuela to Mexico to Chile. That decision is in the hands of his fans, who can vote right now on the itinerary.

The singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist is collaborating on the tour with Songkick Detour. Besides a show in Sao Paulo, what we know for sure is that the excursion will take place between Feb. 17-28.

Here’s how the routing for the tour is going to work. To help pick one of the six stops on the tour, fans should head over to Bird’s page on Songkick Detour’s website and pledge to buy a ticket to a show in one of 15 cities in Latin America.

The first six cities that reach 250 pledges will earn a spot on the tour. After voting began yesterday, Sao Paulo has already earned enough pledges. As of the time of this post, the other cities that had earned the most pledges so far were Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (118 pledges needed); Mexico City (125 pledges needed); Santiago, Chile (199 pledges needed); Lima, Peru (203 pledges needed); and Guadalajara, Mexico (209 pledges needed).

Once the six cities are confirmed, the exact dates and venues will be announced. Fans won’t be charged until the winning cities are confirmed. After that, any remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public.

Fans who pledge for cities that don’t earn enough pledges will not be charged.

“I’ve been wanting to go to these countries for years because I’m a fan of their rich musical traditions,” Bird said. “Songkick Detour seems like a brilliant idea as it gives me a sense of connection to the people before I go there.”
