Blame It On Sandy
As the East Coast struggles to recover from Hurricane Sandy’s wicked Halloween-week bludgeoning, the storm’s impact on show biz has resulted in more cancellations and postponements, including Broadway productions, concerts and TV shows.
New York City officials revoked all filming permits for Monday and Tuesday, affecting prime time programs such as “Gossip Girl,” “Person Of Interest,” “Smash,” “666 Park Avenue,” and “Elementary.”
It wasn’t all grins and giggles over at Comedy Central. The channel canceled Monday night tapings for “The Daily Show feat. Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report.”
ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” also took a breather courtesy of Sandy. The show, which is set in Kimmel’s home town of Brooklyn this week, hopes to return to the airwaves tonight.
Jimmy Fallon and David Letterman went on with their shows Monday night, sans audiences. Commenting on performers having trouble making it into the city, Fallon remarked to an empty house, “You could tell by that one show, ‘Blue Man Guy.’”
But even a solitary member of the famed Blue Man Group would have trouble finding an audience in NYC. All Broadway productions have been shut down until at least Wednesday.
Meanwhile the East Coast’s concert scene reports more cancellations and postponements.
Tonight’s Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band concert at Rochester’s Blue Cross Arena has been moved to tomorrow.
In the New York City area, A Rocket To The Moon scheduled to play The Studio @Webster Hall tonight has been postponed. Other Oct. 30 shows now in the postponement zone include Brand New Heavies at B.B. King’s Blues Club, Deftones at Terminal 5, Rita Ora at the Highline Ballroom and Toots & The Maytals at Ridgefield Playhouse. Griffin House with Seth Glier at City Winery moved to Dec. 26.
The Tubes feat. Fee Waybill at Howard Theater in Washington D.C., has been canceled and the band’s Rams Head OnStage Oct. 31 concert in Annapolis has been postponed.
In Baltimore, Asia’s 30th anniversary gig at Rams Head Onstage in Annapolis has been canceled.
Xavier Rudd at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue in Washington D.C. has been postponed.
Moving to the Philly area, Pretty Lights at Bryce Jordan Center in University Park has been postponed. Joshua Radin has canceled tonight’s Philadelphia Electric Factory show and Pierce The Veil has moved tonight’s Theatre Of Living Arts gig to Nov. 5.
But the above changes only represent a small slice of all concerts scheduled for the areas pummeled by Sandy and more changes are being made even as you read this. Bottom line? People holding tickets for gigs on the East Coast scheduled for this week should check with the venues for the latest postponement/cancellation announcements.
