Rilo Kiley Teases Fans About Reuniting

On Thursday Rilo Kiley updated its Facebook page with a message about a record being “almost finished” that had fans and some music sites questioning whether the defunct band was getting back together.

The indie rock group, which formed in 1998, put out its final full-length album, Under The Blacklight, in 2007. Rilo Kiley last toured in 2008. Following a hiatus, guitarist and co-founder Blake Sennett announced the band had officially broken up during an interview with Spinner in 2011.

Here’s the Facebook post that has gotten everyone talking:

While some fans might hope Rilo Kiley is reuniting and working on a brand new album, many sites have pointed out that Sennett as well as vocalist/keyboardist/guitarist Jenny Lewis have both talked about putting out a compilation of the band’s unreleased songs.

“I think we’re going to try and release a two-disc set of 40 songs, or something,” Sennett told Spinner in 2011. “I think that can be more considered like our last release, to me. But I don’t know.”

Lewis told OC Weekly earlier this year, “Rilo Kiley is putting together this B-sides collection. We’ve been listening and sorting through all these songs from 1998 and just the tone of what I was writing back then was so sad, so dark. And I don’t necessarily feel like that all the time anymore.”

A spokeswoman for Rilo Kiley told Spin the record the band is referring to in the Dec. 27 Facebook post is “not new material.”
