#CutForBieber: 4chan Once Again Behind Bieber Hoax

Members of 4chan reportedly launched the hoax days after news broke that TMZ had obtained pictures of Bieber allegedly smoking marijuana with friends at a party in a Southern California hotel room.  

Message board threads on 4chan, which have since been deleted, reportedly detailed a plot to post pictures of fans cutting themselves over the pop star’s antics to trick young girls into harming themselves. 

Gawker reports that several dummy Twitter accounts were set up by 4chan such as @brittanyscrapma, which has a picture of a teen girl in the profile picture and photos proving she had slashed her wrist because of Bieber.   

According to Gawker, “it remains unclear how many of the photos are authentic, and how many have been seeded by 4chan users.”

Thanks to the fake accounts and the Beeb’s popularity, yesterday #cutforbieber and #cuttingforbieber became top trending hashtags on Twitter. 

The 4chan trolls have also been blamed for targeting Bieber and his fans in October through the #BaldForBieber hoax. The pranksters tried to spread the word that Bieber had cancer and that his loyal followers were shaving their heads in solidarity.

As of the time of this post, the pop star hasn’t directly responded to the marijuana photos or the disturbing #cutforbieber hoax.

Miley Cyrus is one celebrity who has sent out her own tweets in response to the trending hashtags.

“If people are really saying they are gonna cut themselves cuz Justin Bieber could’ve smoked some weed the world really is coming to an end!” Cyrus tweeted Jan. 8.

“I really hope this cutting shit is just a bunch of punk ass haters that have nothing better to do & no one out there harming themselves,” she added. “If you are… seek help.”
