Promoter Henning Tögel Dies

German promoter Henning Tögel died suddenly of a heart attack Jan. 9. He was 58.

The Moderne Welt founder, an International Live Music Conference regular, started his Stuttgart-based company in 1984
A Jan. 15 statement announcing Tögel’s death didn’t mention the longer-term future of the company, but it did make it clear that the company’s dozen or so staff will be “realizing all tours and events as planned.”

These include shows with The Harlem Globetrotters, the world-famous basketball team that regularly worked with Tögel, and German newcomer Furasoul.

The acts who regularly chose Tögel as their German tour promoter included Alice Cooper, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Cyndi Lauper,  Pink, Ringo Starr and many others.

His tours with David Copperfield earned him one of Germany’s Live Entertainment Awards, generally recognized as the “Oscar” of the country’s live entertainment industry.

A note on the Moderne Welt website paid tribute to Tögel’s wish to share his knowledge and experience with his staff and others. He also gave lectures in event management to the nearby University of Heilbronn.

Currently four of the 12 employees at his company are trainees.

“With the passing of Henning Tögel the promotion industry loses an entrepreneur with an immensely creative power, a pioneer and trailblazer who was also politically involved in making sure the live entertainment industry gets its due importance,” the website says, referring to his active contributions at ILMC and Popkomm.

Funeral details hadn’t been made public at press time.
