In 2011 doctors diagnosed Hanneman as suffering from a flesh-eating bacteria that was possibly brought on by a spider bite.  Since then, the axeman had undergone skin grafts and at one time was placed in a medically induced coma.  One year ago the members of Slayer released a message saying their band mate had faced possible amputation of his arm and had to relearn how to walk.

Hanneman’s death was announced on the band’s Facebook page.

“Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

“Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 – 2013).”
