Ricoh Fire Alarm
The picture tweeted May 20 was actually of Muse rehearsing its pyrotechnic display before its May 22 performance.
The picture was tweeted by @Kate_Mulgrew (not the actress from Star Trek) shortly after 9 p.m. “Oooh fire at the Ricoh,” it read.
“I understand that some girls in a shopping arcade near the stadium took some pictures on their mobile phones,” a Ricoh representative told Pollstar.
“It was quite concerning to be fair,” Ricoh marketing director Liz Cooper told BBC News. “My first thoughts were obviously the residents around the Ricoh so we got a message on to Twitter, but within 10 minutes, with the power of social media, it just went ballistic,” she said. “Everybody phoned, everybody was concerned.
“Muse has got a very elaborate production set and they’ve got chimneys on stage. They’ve been rehearsing all weekend and last night it was all of the other bits other than the music and the pyrotechnics play quite a big part.”
The local fire service confirmed that it hadn’t received any emergency calls, but TV soccer pundit Robbie Savage was among those who were fooled.
“Terrible scenes,” he tweeted after seeing the mobile phone pictures.
Muse band member Matt Bellamy also commented on the fireworks: “We fired up the power station tonight. It nearly blew up Coventry!” he tweeted.
