Tom Petty Pays Up

The June 8 show at Los Angeles’ The Fonda ended about 90 minutes into the set after the fire marshal determined the floor at the venue was overcrowded. The Los Angeles Times reported city officials told management that “about 100” fans needed to leave the 1,300-capacity venue or move up to the balcony for the show to go on. After Petty informed the crowd of the situation and nobody volunteered to give up their spot, the band played one more song and then the show was over. The house lights came on and fans booed.

In a statement posted on Petty’s website today (June 12), he notes that the show would have likely gone on for another 30 minutes.

“The satisfaction of fans is of paramount importance to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and the band shares the frustration of the fans in attendance that evening who deserved to experience the entire performance.

“As a result, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and Goldenvoice are pleased to announce that full refunds for the June 8 show are now available at the point of purchase.

“We are also pleased to confirm that Ticketmaster has agreed to refund all incurred Ticketmaster fees.

“Fans who attended the June 8 show at the Fonda Theatre can request a refund with proof of purchase anytime prior to September 10, 2013.”

Petty and The Heartbreakers are also offering full refunds for fans who bought premium ticket packages.

The band put out an earlier statement on Sunday saying they were investigating exactly what happened but that they knew “the number of tickets sold was NOT above the legal capacity of the building. The venue and Ticketmaster documentation confirms this. The Fire Marshal decided that the number of people on the floor (as opposed to on the upstairs balcony or terrace) was unsafe.”
