Deal Leaves Pixies

Kim Deal, bass player and co-singer for the Pixies, left the band June 14. The announcement came via a simple statement on the band’s Facebook page.

“We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies,” the statement said. “We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.”

Deal, Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering comprise one of those fortunate groups that is synonymous with its four members. Although the band could continue to tour, it would need to do so without Deal’s signature vocals.

Deal joined the band in 1986 and, after a storied history, it disbanded in the rock ‘n’ roll tradition of in-fighting and frustration. Deal’s battles with alcohol became a concern, and her subsequent success with her own band, The Breeders, further hindered a reunion.

However, a ballyhooed return of the Pixies, arrived in 2004 and the band has performed for a decade without public incident.
