Garrett rescinded his positions of schools minister and member of parliament June 27.

The announcement came as the Labor party took control of government in June under the leadership of new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

Garrett kept his longtime second career as a politician separated from his rock star past, refusing to use his celebrity to promote political causes.

“If it can’t stand on its own public policy foundations then engaging in stunts isn’t really going to help in the long term,” Garrett said, according to AAP.
