Man Charged In Burglary Attempt Of Kid Rock’s Home
Brian D. Keith of Oakland County’s Independence Township was arraigned by video Tuesday in District Court in Clarkston on felony charges of attempted home invasion and malicious destruction property. Keith asked for a court-appointed attorney and is being held on $75,000 bond.
Keith was arrested Saturday after surveillance photos from security cameras on Kid Rock’s property in Clarkston were released. The photos showed a man ramming the gate last Wednesday and trying to break into the house. The man was on crutches.
In requesting a low bond, Keith told the judge has problems with his legs. He had crutches at his side during the hearing.
“I had 15 screws and two plates put in my knee,” Keith said. “Nurses come by every other day. . I have to start intense physical therapy or else I’ll never walk again.”
Judge Joseph Fabrizio cited Keith’s criminal record and lack of ties to the area in setting the bond high in relation to the charges. Keith has 14 convictions as an adult, including several for drunken driving and fraud, the judge said.
“I do not find that you have strong ties to the community,” Fabrizio told Keith. “You have an out-of-state criminal history. While you have seven children, you do not have any custody of them.”
Authorities have impounded a 1994 Ford Club Wagon van that they say Keith used to force open the gated driveway.
Keith is due back in court Monday.
Kid Rock, who has eight concerts in suburban Detroit starting this weekend, said on his website that he might have used deadly force had he been home during the break-in.
“Thank God I was not on the property at the time of this attempted break in,” he said. “I am an avid hunter and marksman and I will not hesitate to shoot anyone who has myself or family in fear for our lives.”
