Barnett Arena Repairs Cost

Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, S.D., home to the Don Barnett Arena, is in need of about $9 million worth of repairs and officials are trying to figure out where the funds will come from.

The money is needed for hail damage repairs, new computers, security improvements, and escalator and elevator upgrades, facility GM Brian Maliske told an advisory board.

The 10,000-capacity arena was also deemed out of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act in April and is need of about $70 million in upgrades to bring the building up to code.

The Civic Center Advisory Board has requested a list of repair priorities with recommendations on how to pay for the work.

The board is also discussing whether it’s more cost effective to spend the $70 million or to invest about $100 million in building a brand new arena.
