Odds & Ends: Garth Brooks, Pink, Austin Mahone, Glastonbury & Jammit

Saying “it has begun,” Garth Brooks issues a message to fans … The need for vocal rest forces Pink to move a couple of dates … Austin Mahone’s illness forces him to postpone his tour … Metallica talks Glastonbury … Dream Theater and Megadeth are among “Jammit” artists.

Garth Brooks hasn’t gone on a real coast-to-coast tour since Bill Clinton was sitting in the White House.  Could 2014 be the year he returns to the concert stage?

Brooks sent an email to fans today and while the country star didn’t talk about any upcoming live performances, he seemed to indicate that big things are afoot.

“The sevens have aligned.  It has begun … Thank you for believing…love, g.”

Okay, maybe it isn’t an earthshaking, stop-the-presses type of announcement.  After all, he could be talking about the return of Chris Gaines.

Fans of Pink as well as folks who follow tour itineraries as a hobby need to pull out their schedules for the singer and switch a couple of dates around.

Ordered by her doctor to get some “vocal rest,” Pink has moved her show scheduled for last night (Oct. 17) at Salt Lake City’s EnergySolutions Arena to Oct. 29. Tonight’s show in Denver at the Pepsi Center has been moved to Oct. 30.  Pink’s next scheduled gig is Sunday (Oct. 20) in Seattle at the KeyArena At Seattle Center.

YouTube sensation Austin Mahone was supposed to play the Hard Rock Café / Hard Rock Live in Orlando, Fla., tonight, but that show along with the rest of his 2013 tour has been scratched.  At least, that’s what his mom says.  She recently took to the internets to announce the bad news.

“Hey Mahomies, it’s Austin’s mom Michele Mahone.  Austin is very ill.  Unfortunately we are going to postpone the entire MTV Artist To Watch Tour.

“Austin is very upset about this & we want to say we are sorry to all the Mahomies & their parents who have made arrangements to come out.

“We feel very bad but we have no choice but to postpone the tour for now.  Thank you for your prayers #prayforAustin.”

A look at Austin Mahone’s Twitter page shows he tried rescheduling a few individual shows earlier this week and that at one point his temperature had reached 103 degrees.  On Oct. 17 Mother Mahone tweeted, “My poor baby … I cannot remember the last time he was so sick” and included a photo she had posted on Instagram showing her son in the hospital.

Update: After posting this item it was announced that Mahone is suffering from a blood clot.

Stanton Warriors sez it will perform at next year’s Glastonbury Festival, making the British DJ duo the first act to claim a spot on the 2014 lineup.  They made the announcement on their Facebook page, saying the appearance will mark their 10th anniversary playing the event.

Of course, Glastonbury organizers have yet to announce a single act for next year, although the festival is already sold out.  One band rumored to be a possible headliner is Metallica.  Drummer Lars Ulrich talked to NME about the band’s Glastonbury possibilities.

“Every year there’s probably less chance of us doing it than the previous year, but it looks like it would be a fun night out,” Ulrich said.  “”We’ve been fortunate enough to play every other festival on this planet numerous times, so Glastonbury is the only one that’s eluding us.”

What do Dream Theater, Judas Priest and Megadeth have in common, other than the ability to blow roofs off of concert halls?  They’re among the bands having tracks added to Jammit.

What’s Jammit?  Simply put, it’s an app for Apple devices that allows musicians to play over original recordings.  Features include the ability to play along to isolated tracks without having to hear the other instruments on the recording.  Budding musicians can also slow down the track to get a better idea of how to play the piece.

Jammit’s library already has tracks by bands ranging from Nirvana to Pantera to Boston and includes songs by Deep Purple, Foo Fighters, Mastadon and Five Finger Death Punch.

An Android version is expected to be released shortly.  Check it out at Jammit.com.
