Honoured under her real name, Ella Yelich-O’Connor, the 16-year-old declared, “What’s cool about this is I’m so new to this, and everyone has really accepted me, which is awesome.”

Her 34-year old co-writer, Joel Little, told her onstage, “It’s taken me 10 years to get up on this stage, and it’s taken you just 10 months. You’re kind of annoying … the scary part of it is you definitely haven’t written your best song.”

Later Lorde said she wanted to write with Rihanna and the UK’s Ellie Goulding

“Royals” has also notched up top spot in the United Kingdom, after similar success in the United States, New Zealand and Australia.

The event, at Auckland’s , saw singer-songwriter Dave Dobbyn inducted into the NZ Hall of Fame.

Dobbyn who started out with the bands Th’ Dudes and DD Smash, had a series of solo hits including “Slice Of Heaven” used in many NZ tourism ads.
