HMV Revamps Website

HMV has relaunched its website and appears to be focusing on content and personalization, rather than e-commerce, as the British retailer tries to recover from falling into administration.

A story in Marketing Week said site visitors will not be able to buy goods they’d find in store, a sign the high street retailer is yielding the digital market to such rivals as Play.com, Apple and Spotify.

“One of the disappointing things is that in recent years, in terms of content, the company was a little lax in recognizing what they were actually having in the stores,” HMV chairman Paul McGowan earlier told Q magazine, indicating the task is to get music fans back into its shops. “The whole representation of HMV is music and entertainment, and it kind of all revolves around that store.”

The remodeled HMV site now offers uses a place to find information on new releases and older products, as well as on the company itself, aiming to build up a loyal community around the brand and drive them into its stores.

The new site was created by Code Computerlove and replaces a holding site that has been live since Hilco bought HMV out of administration back in April.

It has a strong focus on content curated by a new editorial team, with staff across its chain of stores also contributing.
