NEC Gets 2018 Athletics Games

Birmingham, England, will stage the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championship and provide a huge boost for the , which will host the events.

The venue last hosted the event in 2003 and in 2007 hosted the European equivalent.

“This is a fantastic endorsement for British Athletics, for Birmingham and for the NIA, and testament to our collaborative approach to this bid,” said NEC Group arenas managing director Phil Mead after the Nov. 15 announcement.

“The arena has athletics at its heart, and we have an unrivalled heritage of hosting world class events here.”

Birmingham City Council deputy leader Ian Ward said he’s delighted the city has been successful in securing the 2018 World Indoor Athletics Championships.

“It will also create a fantastic legacy to inspire everyone in the city to get involved in sport and give an estimated economic boost of more than £20 million,” he said.

IAAF vice president Lord Sebastian Coe said the IAAF recognised that the Birmingham bid was a winner and the council was delighted that the city was happy to be awarded the World Champs in 2018.
