Odds & Ends: Outkast, Trace Adkins, Gregg Allman
In addition to the announcement that Outkast will play
A representative for the New York City festival confirmed with Rolling Stone that Andre 3000 and Big Boi will headline the event. Outkast last toured in 2002.
On Wednesday Governors Ball locked down June 6-8 for the festival’s return to Randall’s Island, with the promise that a lineup and ticket onsales would be revealed soon.
Coachella also unveiled big news Wednesday with the roster for its two 2014 weekends in Indio, Calif., at the Empire Polo Club. Along with Outkast, the April 11-13 and 18-20 festivities will feature Muse, Arcade Fire, The Knife, Queens Of The Stone Age, Lorde and many, many more artists.
Trace Adkins has added his name to the list of acts canceling gigs at Orlando’s SeaWorld following criticism of the theme park stemming from the documentary “Blackfish.”
The film portrays the reported mistreatment of killer whales in captivity and highlights the story of Tilikum, a 12,000-pound orca that has killed three people, including a SeaWorld trainer in 2010.
A representative for Adkins released the following statement: “Trace prefers that the focus of his performances be on music, not on controversy. Therefore, he has decided not to proceed with this show in the midst of this debate.”
Animal activists and music fans have been busy during the past few months signing Change.org petitions to pressure musicians to back out of SeaWorld performances.
Since late November REO Speedwagon, Martina McBride, 38 Special, Willie Nelson, Heart, Cheap Trick, Trisha Yearwood and Barenaked Ladies have called off their appearances at the theme park.
SeaWorld spokesman Nick Gollattscheck told CNN, “While we’re disappointed a small group of misinformed individuals was able to deny fans what would have been great concerts at SeaWorld, we respect the artists’ decisions. We expect that other artists will be targeted in this campaign.”
The only previously scheduled acts that haven’t announced SeaWorld cancellations are Justin Moore and Scotty McCreery.
Gollattscheck told CNN that SeaWorld is in the process of booking replacement acts for its “Bands, Blues & BBQ” concert series in February and March.
“We’ll announce the full lineup of bands when all artists have been confirmed,” he said.
The departure of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks from The Allman Brothers Band wasn’t the only Allman news this week.
The actors playing Gregg Allman in the biopic “Midnight Rider” were unveiled, with All-American Rejects singer Tyson Ritter cast as the younger version of the singer and William Hurt taking over as the present-day version.
Wyatt Russell will play Gregg’s brother Duane, according to The Wrap.
“I’m excited to be working with Tyson and Wyatt on the music and the story of my life,” Allman said. “They are really talented actors and musicians.”
The Wrap notes that Allman and his manager, Michael Lehman, will serve as executive producers on “Midnight Rider” and are working closing with producers Randall Miller and Jody Savin of Unclaimed Freight Productions.
“The film focuses on two major parts of Gregg’s life in music: Gregg’s early struggles through the formation of The Allman Brothers Band and the group’s ultimate explosion on the music scene, and Gregg’s struggles to clean himself up from drug and alcohol abuse,” Miller told The Wrap.
Alman will be honored tonight by more than a dozen acts during a special event at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre dubbed “All My Friends: Celebrating The Songs & Voice Of Gregg Allman.”
The lineup includes Trace Adkins, Jackson Browne, Eric Church, Natalie Cole, Brantley Gilbert, Warren Haynes and John Hiatt. The Allman Brothers Band will also perform.
